Basically there are following qualification types: Foundation Course, Higher National Diploma, Bachelors Degree, Masters Degree. All these courses cover several areas - Business, Design (with various sub-categories), Marketing, Textiles, Promotion, Branding and Journalism.
Foundation Course
A Foundation Course is essential, not only in helping you obtain an entry into BA level but also to realise which pathway in fashion is most suited to you.
A Foundation Course exclusively in Fashion Design caters to specific activities related to the fashion scene. There are a variety of pathways that might take your fancy including - Fashion Accessories, Fashion Photography, Fashion Journalism, Costume Design, Fashion Illustration, Tailoring, Pattern Cutting or Fashion Design in Womenswear / Menswear. This course is also a stepping stone onto the B.A Degree course for related subjects, at any University.
A Foundation Course in Art will offer you a taste for a range of subjects including Product Design, Ceramics, Sculpture, Painting, Drawing and Fashion, amongst others. This will enable you to discover your aptitude and skills for the career you are most suited for.
Higher National Diploma
After a Foundation Course you can do a two year HND, instead of a three year B.A Degree. At the end of the two years, you can continue to do the third year of the B.A Degree in your chosen college - should you wish to do so. This may be subject to your performance and grades. It is also possible to do an HND in Tailoring or Pattern Cutting and continue onto the third year B.A Degree in Fashion Design. You might find this more interesting than three full years of Fashion Design.
BA Fashion Degree
The BA Fashion Degree is an intensive three-year, full-time course focusing you on your fashion career ahead. From here on you are on your own. Your tutors merely play the role of advisors and guidance counsellors. The first two years of the B.A course will help you find your own style and philosophy in your designs. This involves prolific design sketches with a substantial amount of 'made' garments that you will produce in the duration of the course. As with any other work the more you do, the more it does for you. The third year will be the culmination of the two years of time you invested. - a single statement to sum up the previous two years. Graduate Fashion Week is a big event in the fashion calendar and is hotly anticipated by the fashion industry. This is could be make or break time for you. This will be your moment.
MA Degree
The M.A Degree is usually pursued by mature student with substantial industry experience. A previous B.A Degree is not the sole criteria as experience and talent play an important role in the selection process. The end-of-the-year M.A fashion show is the result of time spent on intensive research, design development, and finding a niche for yourself in the fashion industry, be it prêt-a-porter, haute couture, high street or designer class.
Some colleges may offer technology related classes along with the creative side. For example tuition in Photoshop and I-Graphics Design.
